Label Printing

Last updated: Jul 6, 2026

Efficient labeling is a core part of working with Apini. This guide explains everything you need to know about label printing in the app: which printers work best, which labels to use, how to set up printing on different platforms, and how to resolve common issues.

Supported Printers

Apini supports the Detonger P1 and Detonger P1P portable direct-thermal label printers. These models offer reliable performance, good print quality, and broad compatibility.

Most other Detonger printers also work, but may require manual calibration. For consistently sharp text and small-format labels, we recommend choosing a 300 dpi model. Lower-resolution 203 dpi printers often struggle with small labels, barcodes, and fine details.

Where to Buy

You can purchase the Detonger P1/P1P on Amazon:

The 300 dpi high-resolution version is currently available only directly from the manufacturer.

Why We Selected These Printers

When choosing printers to support in Apini, we focused on practical criteria:

  • Low cost – accessible for labs, clinics, offices, and field work.
  • Portability – compact, battery-powered, and easy to carry.
  • No vendor lock-in – works with generic, chip-less thermal labels.
  • 300 dpi availability – essential for small labels and crisp readability.

Very few portable printers meet all of these requirements. Detonger’s 300 dpi models are among the only options that combine affordability, portability, and high print quality without locking users into proprietary consumables.

Supported Labels

Apini currently supports 50 × 30 mm direct thermal labels.

A commonly used option is available on Amazon:

Label Size Options

If 50 × 30 mm labels don’t fit your needs: Support for 30 × 20 mm labels and specialized vial labels is coming soon.

Custom Label Layouts

Apini is optimized for fast, simple labeling—especially for items that would otherwise be labeled by hand. Custom layouts are not available in the free version.

Specialized Labels for Cryo & Chemical Use

For demanding environments—cryogenic storage, chemical exposure, solvents—both LabTag and DiversifiedBiotech offer compatible direct thermal labels:

These labels are engineered for extreme temperatures and harsh conditions.

Platform Support

Printing with Apini works on:

  • iOS
  • Android
  • Web (Chrome and Edge)

Safari and Firefox currently lack the required Bluetooth Web API support, so printing is not available on those browsers.

Proximity Printing

Apini automatically prints to the nearest available printer on iOS and Android.

On the web, browsers require explicit device selection. You will be prompted to choose the printer in the Bluetooth dialog before printing.

No Drivers or Pairing Required

Apini communicates directly with supported printers:

  • No drivers are needed.
  • No Bluetooth pairing is required.

Simply turn on the printer and print.

Troubleshooting

Printer Not Found

If the printer does not appear:

  • Turn the printer off and on again.
  • If the printer was previously paired in system Bluetooth settings, unpair it. Paired devices can block direct access from the app.

Error While Printing

If an error occurs, Apini will display a message explaining the issue. Follow the instructions shown on screen.

Misaligned Print

If prints are vertically misaligned after changing the roll:

  • Press the eject button once to feed a label and allow the printer to re-align.

Horizontal misalignment usually indicates an unsupported printer model. Contact us if you need calibration data added for your device.
